School Door Numbers
Sometimes designers get lucky and are asked to do a pro bono job that's a delight from end to end. This was one of those projects.
Dr. Kristin Droege, Principal of Larchmont Charter School West Hollywood (LCW), asked me to create door numbers for all classroom doors. Dr. Droege knew that I specialized in paper cut designs and gave me free rein -- the only stipulation being that the numbers be "bright and fun." So I capitalized on the school's affiliation with Alice Waters' Edible Schoolyard Project and crafted patterns with garden vegetable motifs.
If you look closely, each pattern illustrates its corresponding numeral. For example Door Number 3 features trios of Eggplants topped with triple-leaf stems and 3 shades of purple. Proof that designers and math play well together! 2011 Graphic Design, Pattern Design, Textile Design -
Buffet Cards for Traditional Home magazine
For a show-stopping party spread, use these graphic tabletop cards to let guests know what’s on the menu, what’s in a dish, or who’s sitting where. Each Paper-Cut Cherry Tomato, Baguette, Wheat Stalk, Butternut Squash, Garlic or Red Pepper/Eggplant card comes with a separate label for handwriting a guest’s name or menu item. Card comes with a separate label for handwriting a guest’s name or menu item. Vertical, larger cards are perfect for listing the entire menu or table number. You’ll want to keep these intricate hand-cut, layered works of art or send them home as party favors for guests.

Colony
In this fresh take on a landscape, Anna took the playful blue shapes left behind after cutting her "Fruited Plane" pattern, nested them in her signature style, then arranged them in a high-contrast composition of orange, crimson red, and bright white.

Kyoto Pathway
While poring through books on the Japanese tea ceremony, Anna was entranced by the garden’s wabi sabi stepping stones, nested among green tea-colored grass. This inviting path is brightened with crimson and espresso accents.

Petal Cascade
In search of an alternative to the typical floral pattern, Anna explored the beauty of a flower deconstructed, its individual petals laid side to side. Aperfect harmony of curves and points plus triangular flourishes in between. Available in grass green/pool blue/yellow and sunshine yellow/steel blue/true blue.

Pattern in Flight
A fan of both the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements, Anna cut motifs that celebrated both styles' sinuous elegance. The pattern's petal- and wing-like shapes appear to fly in tandem. Available in avocado/lavender and light gray/high noon yellows.
As a bonus, the shapes left behind on her cutting mat give Anna instant fodder for new designs. We like to think of it as “recycling by design." 2011 Fine Arts, Pattern Design, Textile Design -
Kimonos in Flight
An avid follower of Japanese design, Anna was taken by a kimono on display, its sleeves outstretched. She cut and repeated the garment’s shape, then filled the negative spaces between. Presto! An open book appeared, which suited her just fine. Available in aqua /espresso/high noon yellows and lavender-gray/pine/high noon yellows.

Scandinavia
Anna finds inspiration in the various art books she collects. In this case she fell for the graceful curves and goose neck of a bulbous Scandinavian metal pitcher. She rotated the motifs and added lively interior accents, giving this unusual pattern its energy and humor. In caper green/rose pink/beige.

Winged
"Winged" was inspired by Anna's chance encounter in the desert with a raven that was hovering on an updraft directly above her. The pattern's abstract motif is a bird's wing stripped to its aerodynamic curves and points. Available in purple gray/limestone outline/tangerine/goldenrod.

Fruited Plane
A beach stone collector, Anna sketched their wave-smoothed shapes, then cut an intricate interior to add excitement. This transformed the stones into luscious, ripe fruit, cut into cross-section and ready to eat. Available in Chinese red lantern/lemon chiffon and espresso/pool blue.

Haiku Design Pod
This intriguing arrangement was born of Anna's goal to create detailed beauty inside very small canvases. The result? Tiny, gem-like 2" x 3" compositions arranged four across and four down. These 16one-of-a-kind, sometimes mysterious compositions capture the spirit ofhaiku: distilled beauty born of limitation.
